Size, Seating, & Safety
The smallest of the bunch is the RAV4. If you are okay with five-passenger seating and do a lot of driving in a busy city like Tampa, you'll appreciate this vehicle's smaller stature that makes quick work of those tricky parallel parking situations. The Highlander is only 2-inches longer than the 4Runner, so size wise they're comparable. However, their interiors are vastly different. The Highlander is a midsize SUV with standard three-row seating. Most trims fit eight passengers, but there are a few with seven passenger seating and a second-row captain's chair. The 4Runner is an SUV and most trims seat five, though select trims have the option to get a three-row setup.
The Toyota brand is known for reliability, but in the past few years they've made a reputation for being a brand that also cares deeply about safety. Unlike many of its rivals, most new Toyota vehicles have standard advanced safety features thanks to the Toyota Safety Sense™ package. Toyota Safety Sense™ is on the RAV4 and Highlander, so if having added peace of mind and support is important as you commute from Wesley Chapel, choose either of these models.
Because the 4Runner is known for its off-roading and rugged abilities, it doesn't have standard or even available Toyota Safety Sense™ features. While that might be a deal breaker for drivers who really value advanced safety, there are still plenty who are fine forgoing these features, and that's okay!
Performance
If you plan on towing around Winter Haven with your Toyota SUV, you want to be certain you choose one with the ability to get the job done. All 4Runner trims have a 4.0L V6 engine with 270 horsepower and 278 lb-ft torque. This engine can tow up to 5,000 pounds.
The Highlander has two engines. The tow-friendly one is the 3.5L V6 that is available on the base and standard on the other trims. It has 295 horsepower, 263 lb-ft torque, and towing up to 5,000 pounds. (The base trim's standard engine, which is a 2.7L with 185 horsepower and 184 lb-ft torque, can tow up to 1,500 pounds.)
As you might expect, the RAV4 isn't exactly meant to tow heavy. The FWD models can tow up to 1,500 pounds, and the AWD models up to 3,500 pounds. All RAV4's are powered by a 2.5L with 203 horsepower and 184 lb-ft torque.
Since we're discussing performance, we should talk about the 4Runner. What really sets it apart from the other models is its off-road capabilities and engineering. We're talking shocks, skid plates, locking rear differentials, and all the other engineering that makes it possible to safely take on off-road trails. If you want to bring some adventure to your 4-wheel travels, this is an SUV to consider!
Convenience Technology
The RAV4, 4Runner, and Highlander all come with a touchscreen that's at least 6.1-inches. Depending on the model and trim, you can get bigger displays. If having the most "advanced" touchscreen technology is important, we highly suggest going with the 2019 RAV4. Starting in 2019, the RAV4 will have Apple CarPlay™ smartphone integrations! This is an exciting partnership that many have been waiting for.
